Built to the 2024 Player's Handbook
Dragonborn characters choose a Draconic Ancestry, and that choice determines both the damage type of their Breath Weapon and what they resist. The 2024 rules kept the same ten ancestries as before but changed how the Breath Weapon works: you can now use it a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest (up from once per short rest), choose between a 15-foot cone or a 30-foot line regardless of ancestry, and gain Darkvision, which wasn't part of the species before. Ability score increases no longer come from your species at all; they come from your background instead. Draconic Flight, a new feature letting you sprout temporary wings, unlocks at level 5.

Frequently asked questions
Why do dragonborn names include a clan name?
Dragonborn naming convention places a clan name before the given name, similar to a surname carried with pride rather than tucked at the end. Toggle the clan name option above to include or drop it.
Does the ancestry I pick actually matter mechanically?
Yes. Under the 2024 rules, your Draconic Ancestry choice sets both your Breath Weapon's damage type and what damage type you resist, they always match. Gold and Red ancestries both deal Fire, for example, so the choice between them is about scale color and flavor, not different mechanics.
What changed for dragonborn between the 2014 and 2024 rules?
The Breath Weapon now recharges by proficiency bonus per long rest instead of once per short rest, you can choose the cone or line shape regardless of ancestry, Darkvision was added, ability score increases moved to backgrounds instead of species, and Draconic Flight was added at level 5.
Can I generate a name for a specific dragonborn class, like a paladin or barbarian?
Not as a dedicated filter yet. The generator produces names that work across any class; class-specific naming flavor is on the list for a future update once real demand for it is confirmed.
